Wheeling and Chicago North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau Host Chicago Northern Suburbs Real Estate Event

Staff Reports

The Village of Wheeling's Economic Development team and The Chicago North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau welcomed over 160 attendees to the Bisnow Chicago event, "Chicago Northern Suburbs Real Estate: Exploring New Developments in Hospitality, Multifamily and Entertainment."

This is the second Bisnow event hosted in Wheeling within the last six months highlighting Wheeling's economic successes while attracting key business leaders from across the Chicagoland region. Attendees included business owners, developers, investors, real estate brokers, business consultants, architects, engineers, designers, lawyers, accountants, banking professionals, and city and government leaders.

Driven by an evolving tourist base and shaped by complex economic conditions, developers across Chicago's Northern Suburbs are working harder than ever to achieve visitor satisfaction and meet local demands. The first panel, "Mixed-Use, Multifamily, and Retail Opportunities: Exploring Development Trends Across the Asset Classes" offered developer insight highlighting key trends, projects and developments in northern Chicago suburbs, and how Wheeling is at the forefront of transformative developments.

The second panel, "Developing Modern Downtowns: Chicago Northern Suburbs Real Estate" showcased the $110 million Wheeling Town Center. Located in the heart of Wheeling, this transit-oriented development serves as Wheeling’s downtown anchor which is immediately adjacent to the 100-acre Heritage Park, Wheeling Park District Gym, Community Center and Aquatic Center, Wheeling Metra Station, and Wheeling’s municipal campus. The Wheeling Town Center features 301 luxury apartment units and 100,000 square feet of retail, restaurant and entertainment space. The anchor tenant, Cinergy, is a state-of-the-art movie dine-in theater that includes a restaurant and bar in the lounge of the theater that is open to the public.  In 2019, Starbucks Coffee, and AT&T opened their doors, followed by a number of restaurants that opened in 2020. Moretti's Restaurant and Wintrust will be opening soon.

In the last decade alone, Wheeling has seen an influx of nearly 1500 new residents that now reside in ONE Residences at Wheeling Town Center, Uptown 500, Northgate Crossing, and Union Apartments. The northern suburbs' construction and development has been changed by the state and Chicago’s growing national profile. The area has evolved to meet the changing needs of businesses and the community. Wheeling has experienced a boom of young, urban professionals and empty nesters seeking quality of life, a strategic location, and a thriving dining scene.

Wheeling is also home to the Westin Chicago North Shore Hotel and Convention Center, which is the largest hotel in the north Chicago region. This event was held at Saranello's, a Lettuce Entertain You Restaurant, located adjacent to the Westin.
