Wieland

Wieland Metals opened in Wheeling in 1980 at 567 Northgate Parkway, in the northern industrial corridor. The production site serves as a slitting center for copper and high-performance alloy strips for customers in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

In 2019, the Village of Wheeling approved a Resolution in support of a Cook County 6b property tax incentive to support new industrial construction and redevelopment that helped Weiland expand here. As a result, the company expanded its footprint in Wheeling by bringing a new business unit, Wieland Thermal Solutions, to 707 Northgate Parkway. 

Wieland Thermal Solutions manufacturers enhanced surface tubes and low finned tubes mainly in copper and copper alloys. Wieland Thermal Solutions’ main customers are in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry located throughout North and Central America.

Apprenticeship Program

In 2021, Wieland began an apprenticeship program with the local community college, Harper College, which has also garnered interest from local high school students. Currently, six apprentices are enrolled in Wieland’s three-year apprenticeship program which enables the students to attend courses at Harper College two days a week and work at Wieland three days a week (while getting paid for five days a week plus benefits). The program offers the students an Associates in Science degree in Mechatronics and Applied Science in Manufacturing. Upon completion, apprentices also receive a German IHK/AHK certification through the German American Chamber of Commerce, as well as a journeyman card through the Department of Labor. 60% of the apprentices are Wheeling High School graduates, and the program continues to grow.

In the last three years, Wieland has made over $1.5 million dollar investment in their Apprenticeship Program, with a half-million dollars going towards equipment. In addition to Wieland’s financial commitment, Wieland also receives grants and tax incentives for the program.
